So I hope they realize it’s still the same Jordin, even though it’s not like the big ballads that everyone expects – I just hope that they like it and they’re proud, because I worked really hard.Born to professional football player Phillippi Sparks, young Jordin Sparks attended Sandra Day O’Connor High School in Arizona, before being homeschooled in order to concentrate on her singing. What, ultimately, are you hoping people get out of your music?Ī.I just really hope – I’m still me, I put “me” into it and I won’t change. People are gonna say what they wanna say and buy it or not buy it. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have sold millions of records all around the world, it’s amazing. I definitely think there are still gonna be those people who are like, “Oh, “American Idol”, whatever,” but I think it really has proven its credibility. Do you think some people will dismiss the album because of you winning “American Idol”?Ī.
… I’m very happy that I’m at the age I’m at because it gives me an opportunity to grow (creatively). I’m opinionated, I’m very stubborn – a little strong-willed, I guess (laughs). Were you concerned that people wouldn’t take you seriously because of your age?Ī.For me, with this album, there was that pressure – because I am 17: “Oh my gosh, she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she’s not ready for this, she’s not experienced enough” and I think I’m kind of surprising people. There are some songs that are more guitar-driven and there are some songs that are more rhythmic. Q, Did you set out to make the album with any specific sound in mind?Ī.I love so many kinds of different music and I didn’t really know what to do, so my plan was to incorporate a little bit of everything on the album and I think it’s a pretty good mix.
I didn’t really have much time (to make the album) – right from the (“American Idol”) finale to now has pretty much been a whirlwind. I’m new, but I’m very excited about … how it’s turned out. I don’t know how many people can say that. I take it you’re happy with the final product?Ī.I’m actually very, very, very happy … with the whole album. I’m nervous when I start to think about all the political stuff – album sales and stuff like that – (but) other than that, I’m excited. I don’t really know what’s happening to me – I’m very, very, very, veryexcited. So how’re you feeling about your album? Nervous? Excited? Scared?Ī.I’m ecstatic – just the fact that I’m saying that I have (one) day until (my album) comes out is tripping me out.

The Star-Telegram caught up with the daughter of former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Phillippi Sparks to discuss her career aspirations and whether being on one of the world’s most popular reality TV show will cause people to bypass her album. If she’s at all worried about her future in the ever-fickle pop music business, she doesn’t show it. Sparks’ self-titled debut, cranked out in the five months between her “Idol” victory in May and the end of October, hits stores Nov. She punctuates nearly every other sentence with an engaging giggle, making her difficult to dislike during our recent phone conversation (although many, many music critics are no doubt sharpening the knives “Idol” winners traditionally face a tough audience the first time around).
